Summary
Adolescence is a complex phase - a bridge between childhood and adulthood. During this time, people are confronted with major physical, psychological, relational, and cognitive challenges and changes that can significantly affect their psychological adjustment and future development. School plays an important role in this, as it is the environment in which young people can express themselves and interact with peers and significant adults who are not part of their family environment. School is also the context in which young people have the most experiences outside of their family environment and is an important observation point for identifying and offering support to those at risk. In addition, it is a favorable context for the implementation of prevention and intervention measures aimed at promoting the emotional, psychological, and relational well-being of adolescents.
The aim of this special topic is to promote scientific research in the field of psychology applied to the school and educational context. In particular, this special topic aims to promote research on risk and protective factors related to adolescents' psychological well-being, the mechanisms involved, and possible support and intervention strategies based on empirical research.
The Special Topic is interested in original and empirical research (both qualitative and quantitative), experiments, meta-analyses, and systematic or narrative reviews. Contributions from all parts of the world are welcome, and cross-cultural research is encouraged.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Risk and protective factors associated with the promotion of adolescent psychological well-being, with particular reference to the school context.
- Quality of the teacher-student relationship and its impact on school adjustment.
- Quality of the parental relationship and its contribution to the development of adolescents' emotional well-being and their school adjustment.
- Quality of peer relationships, bullying, and peer victimization, with particular reference to the school context.
- Prevention and intervention of adolescent abuse and maltreatment and promotion of psychological and academic adjustment of adolescents who have been exposed to traumatic experiences, including the influences of adverse developmental experiences in childhood on adolescents' psychological and school adjustment.
- Programs to prevent mental health problems or deviant or risky behavior.
- Programs to prevent or intervene in suicidality, psychopathological disorders, and risky behavior.
- Training or awareness programs for students, parents, teachers, educators, and school staff to promote the mental health of adolescents.
- Validation of instruments to measure constructs related to the mental well-being of adolescents.
- Research on the effectiveness of school psychological services in promoting better psychological adjustment of adolescents and higher levels of psychological well-being.
- assessment, prevention, and intervention to promote the inclusion and mental well-being of vulnerable and/or minority students (e.g. students with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQI+).
