Summary

We are proposing a Special Issue on adolescent and youth mental health. Adolescence and emerging adulthood are key stages of development in which many coping responses and lifestyles are initiated and established and where the promotion of adaptive social and emotional skills may influence psychological well-being across the lifespan.

After the recent pandemic, mental health was severely affected in all age groups, but more research is required focusing on young people given that they are in a complex period of development in the transition to adulthood. The analysis of the key risk and protective factors for mental health and the role of developmental contexts could give us clues for the design of programs that promote a more resilient transition.

For this Special Issue, empirical works that collect research results or intervention programs related to mental health and the risk/protective factors in adolescents and youth are welcome for submission. Regarding mental health, we consider both positive indicators of psychological well-being and thriving, as well as psychological symptoms or mental health problems.

We also have a special interest in the role of youth social engagement and pro-environmental behaviors, lifestyles (such as sport and physical activity, sleep quality, internet use, etc.), social and emotional skills, and the importance of developmental contexts (i.e., family, peer, neighborhood and academic environment). Systematic literature reviews and metanalysis may be considered for publication as well.

Abstract Objectives: Early adolescence is a key period of ecological and physiological change, during which exposure to accumulating risks from various environmental systems can negatively impact mental health. This study aimed to investigate the potential longitudinal relationships among cumulative risk, depression, and psychache in adolescents. Methods: A three-wave longitudinal study spanning one year was conducted with 675 (47.5% girls; Mean age = 14.13, standard deviation [SD] = 0.45) middle school students. The Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) was used to explore the dynamic reciprocal relationships among these variables. Results: At the within-individual level, cumulative risk, depression, and… More >

Abstract Objectives: Academic Evaluation Anxiety is a significant psychological concern among adolescents, with well-documented impacts on academic performance, emotional well-being, and school engagement. In Portugal, recent evidence suggests growing pressure on students to achieve high academic standards, with psychosocial variables such as resilience, perceived support, and school environment playing a crucial role. This study aims to examine the prevalence and psychosocial predictors of Academic Evaluation Anxiety in Portuguese students, and to identify risk and protective factors that inform educational practice. Methods: This cross-sectional, quantitative study analysed data from 3083 students (5th to 12th grade) from the… More >

Abstract Objectives: The climate crisis demands urgent action from all sectors of society, including young people in higher education. While previous research has explored individual and contextual predictors of pro-environmental behaviour (PEB), the contribution of Positive Youth Development (PYD) remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between PYD dimensions (Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring) and two environmental outcomes: environmental habits and climate change awareness, considering gender differences. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 1779 students from 10 universities in Andalusia (Spain). Data were collected through an online survey assessing PYD indicators,… More >
