Summary
This special issue of the International Journal of Mental Health Promotion explores the intricate connections between children's and adolescents' mental and physical health, with a focus on the multifactorial influences of sleep, nutrition, stress, anxiety, arousal, and physical activity on overweight and obesity. Childhood and adolescence represent critical developmental periods in which lifestyle behaviors and psychological well-being shape long-term health outcomes. Poor sleep patterns, inadequate or imbalanced nutrition, and elevated stress and anxiety levels not only contribute to mental health challenges but also exacerbate weight gain, metabolic disturbances, and obesity risk. Similarly, deficits in physical activity and the presence of heightened arousal states play a dual role in undermining both psychological resilience and physical health.
This issue emphasizes an integrative perspective, recognizing overweight and obesity as outcomes of interconnected biopsychosocial pathways. Contributions highlight the need for robust assessment methods that capture these complex dynamics and evaluate interventions aimed at promoting healthier lifestyle behaviors, reducing psychological burden, and fostering resilience. Interventions discussed include school-based programs, family-centered approaches, clinical and community-level strategies, and emerging evidence-based practices such as mindfulness, behavioral therapies, and lifestyle modification plans. Additionally, the issue examines how these factors influence not only immediate health but also long-term lifespan outcomes, including chronic disease risk, mental health trajectories, academic achievement, and social development.
By addressing the interplay of mental and physical health determinants, this special issue underscores the importance of early, holistic, and multidisciplinary strategies to prevent overweight and obesity while simultaneously promoting psychological well-being. The insights presented aim to inform health professionals, educators, policymakers, and researchers, fostering the development of tailored, evidence-based interventions that contribute to healthier, more resilient generations.
