    Ecofriendly E-Nose Based in PLA and Only 0.3 wt% of CNTs

    Abstract In this work, conductive polymer nanocomposites were developed based on a biodegradable and biobased polymer (poly (lactic acid)), with the incorporation of only 0.3 wt% of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to be used as volatile solvent sensors. The correct dispersion of the nanofiller was achieved thanks to a CNT non-covalent modification with an azo-dye (disperse orange 3) which allowed to reach the percolation for electric conduction in values as low as 0.3 wt%.     Effects of precipitation changes on the dynamics of sparse elm woodland in Northeastern China

    Abstract Elm (Ulmus pumila L.) is the dominant tree species in the sparse elm woodland, the original vegetation in the Horqin Sandy Land. The effects of changes in precipitation on U. pumila trees have not been fully studied. We determined a dynamic model by considering the five stages in the U. pumila life cycle, i.e. seed, seedling, and juvenile, mature and over-mature tree stages. The effects of changes in precipitation on population density and age structure were then evaluated.     Abstract In two tomato genotypes, we assessed control alternatives for damping-off with combinations of chemical fungicides and native/commercial strains of biological agents. Forty treatments consisting of 19 levels of mixing products, chemical fungicides, native strains and commercial products from biological control agents, and untreated treatment were used onto Ramsés and Toro hybrids.     Abstract Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most Aluminum (Al) sensitive cereal species. In this study, the physiological, biochemical, and molecular response of barley seedlings to Al treatment was examined to gain insight into Al response and tolerance mechanisms. The results showed that superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activity were inhibited to different degrees following Al exposure. The MDA content also significantly increased with increasing Al concentrations.     Abstract Melatonin (MLT) is a hormonal substance found in many organisms and can improve plant stress resistance. In this study, the japonica rice variety Y32 and indica rice variety NJ6 were cultivated in hydroponics under different concentrations of CdCl2 at the two-leaf stage. The growth, physiological and biochemical responses of the seedlings and the expression of cadmium (Cd)-related genes under exogenous melatonin (MLT) treatment were assessed.     Abstract We study the mechanical behavior of a prototype osseointegrated dental implant containing a thin internal layer, designed in such a way as to simulate the existence of the periodontal ligament (PDL). Experimental stress-strain curves suggest that the behavior of the PDL can be simulated by means of a compressible hyperelastic constitutive model, at least for short-term loading.     Abstract In this paper, a modified paradigm of quasi conforming finite element method with truncated polynomial expansions of in-domain displacements and derived expansions of strains is introduced.     Abstract A meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is applied to solve thermal bending problems described by the Reissner-Mindlin theory. Functionally graded material properties with continuous variation in the plate thickness direction are considered too. A weak formulation for the set of governing equations in the Reissner-Mindlin theory is transformed into local integral equations on local subdomains in the mean surface of the plate with using a unit test function.     Phase-field simulation of domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films with deadlayers

    Abstract Phase field simulation is an effective way to predict the domain evolution in ferroelectric materials. A phase field model is developed to investigate the domain structures and polarization switching in in ferroelectric thin films with deadlayers. Simulation results show that the deadlayers as well as misfit strain have a significant influence on the domain structures and polarization switching in the ferroelectric thin films. It is found that the simulated switching electric field in ferroelectric thin films decreases with the thickness of the deadlayers increasing. More >
