Summary

The substantial damages incurred from recent and past seismic events for concrete structures underscore the urgent necessity for implementing effective strategies to address these seismic risks. Such strategies are vital not only for existing and new structures and infrastructure, but also for maintaining and enhancing them. The seismic design and retrofit of concrete structures traditionally rely on reducing seismic forces to achieve an economical design, assuming inelastic deformations are controlled. While conventional seismic-resistant design and retrofit methods for standard structures can ensure life safety and significantly delay collapse, they often result in substantial nonstructural and structural damage under strong seismic events. Hence, this special issue of Seismic Performance and Retrofit of Concrete Structures seeks contributions to modern seismic design, assessment, and retrofit strategies that promote seismic risk management of civil engineering concrete structures. Original research studies, including detailed critical literature reviews, response simulation and experimental investigations, and case studies, are welcome for submission to this special issue. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Experimental and computational research to control the damage of existing and new concrete structures under seismic events;
· Seismic retrofit techniques and reparable concrete structural systems;
· Seismic fragility assessment and risk mitigation of concrete buildings and bridges;
· Structural vibration control and seismic isolation of concrete structures;
· Smart materials and systems for earthquake engineering;
· Innovations in seismic design and assessment of concrete buildings and bridges;
· Experiences from recent earthquakes related to concrete structures.
