Summary

Online activities have grown rapidly in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic's impact. In this regard, we have edited a special issue on Addictive Behaviors in the IJMHP. It was a successful experience, as many researchers are interested in this topic. In this regard, we intend to have a second edition of Addictive Behaviors to encourage more recent evidence associated with behavioral addictions contributed to the IJMHP. Moreover, we would like to expand the scope of our first edition from Addictive Behaviors to Health Issues in Modern Society: Addictive Behaviors and Psychological Health. This is because psychological health is important in modern society as well. The aim and scope of this special issue are to understand different types of addictive behaviors (including their prevalence, potential predictors, and possible mechanisms), their health consequences (e.g., quality of life, psychological distress, sleep disturbances), and the impact on individuals' psychological health. Original studies and review papers are welcome. Interested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Health consequences and addictive behaviors
- Cultural issues in addictive behaviors
- Comparisons of different types of addictive behaviors
- Useful instruments assessing addictive behaviors
- Mechanisms explaining addictive behaviors
- Trend of addictive behaviors across different eras

Digital Distraction and Sleep: Distinct Pathways from Phubbing Dimensions to Teachers’ Insomnia through Psychological Distress

Si-Han Chen, Yun Song, Xian-Yin Li, Jun-Ping Zhou, I-Hua Chen
International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.28, No.6, 2026, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2026.079774
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Health Issues in Modern Society: Addictive Behaviors and Psychological Health)
Abstract Backgrounds: In the digital era, smartphone-driven phubbing behavior has become increasingly prevalent among teachers and may contribute to insomnia. Psychological distress has been identified as a potential mechanism linking maladaptive technology use to sleep problems; however, this mediating pathway has not been examined longitudinally. Furthermore, gender differences in these associations remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between phubbing behavior and insomnia, the mediating role of psychological distress, and the moderating role of gender. Methods: A two-wave longitudinal design with a four-month interval was employed. At Time 1 (T1), 1061 teachers participated, with… More >

Longitudinal Impact of Childhood Psychological Abuse on Adolescent Smartphone Addiction: A Moderated Mediation Model

Junwei Zhang, Jingbo Wang, Qiangzhi Zuo, Tong Han, Yang Liu
International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.28, No.5, 2026, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2026.076641
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Health Issues in Modern Society: Addictive Behaviors and Psychological Health)
Abstract Objectives: Existing research indicates a link between childhood physical abuse (CPA) and adolescent smartphone addiction (SA), yet it primarily relies on cross-sectional data. This leaves the longitudinal developmental pathways, including the mediating role of anxiety and the potential protective role of physical activity (PA), poorly understood and insufficiently examined. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between CPA and SA among Chinese middle school students, and to investigate the mediating role of anxiety and the moderating role of PA in this relationship. Methods: This study was conducted in two waves of a longitudinal design with… More >

The Emotional Pathway to Addiction: A Dual-Path Mediation Model of Psychological Maltreatment and Social Media Dependence in Adolescents

Juyan Fang, Xin Deng, Mengting Pan, Guoqiang Chen, Yang Liu
International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.28, No.4, 2026, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2026.073013
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Health Issues in Modern Society: Addictive Behaviors and Psychological Health)
Abstract Objectives: Social Media Dependence (SMD) has emerged as a growing public health concern among adolescents. Psychological Maltreatment (PM), characterized by denigration, intimidation, and emotional neglect, is considered an important familial risk factor for adolescents’ emotional and behavioral problems. However, the psychological mechanisms linking PM to adolescent SMD remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine the relationship between PM and SMD and to explore the mediating roles of Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF), Depression (DP), and Anxiety (AN). Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2243 Chinese adolescents. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and mediation analyses were performed… More >
