Summary
Lithium batteries have become a crucial energy storage solution for various applications, including electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy sectors. Their high energy density, long cycle life, and relatively low self-discharge rates make them an attractive option for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the performance and lifespan of Lithium-ion batteries are significantly affected by temperature, making thermal management a critical aspect of battery design and operation. As such, effective thermal management systems are essential to prevent the so-called thermal runaway, which can lead to catastrophic consequences.
This special issue aims to compile recent research and innovations in the area of lithium battery thermal management, including advanced cooling strategies, battery system design and optimization, as well as intelligent fault detection and hazard mitigation. Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to:
· Design and evaluation of innovative thermal management strategies;
· Single and multi-phase cooling systems;
· Battery pack designs, including structural battery packs;
· Advanced materials for thermal conductivity enhancement;
· Thermal runaway propagations and containments;
· AI-based monitoring, maintenance, and risk mitigations;
· Battery operations under extreme weather;
· Safety/abuse tests and risk assessments.
