Summary

Modern machining, whether extractive or additive, relies on a combination of complex movements performed by technological equipment, whether CNC machine tools, industrial robots or other types of machines. CAM software packages do a good job of simulating these motions by using realistic kinematic models of the technological equipment used. However, these kinematic models cannot really be considered as true digital twins, as most of them only allow the simulation of motions for collision avoidance purposes, without allowing the estimation of static and/or dynamic stresses on the equipment.

This special session aims to present the results of research aimed at developing digital twins of technological equipment (numerically controlled machine tools or industrial robots) that allow both a realistic simulation of the motions and the estimation of the static and/or dynamic stresses on the mechanical structure of the equipment, depending on the trajectories traversed, the technological resisting forces and the machining regimes.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:
- Development of digital twins for CNC machining centers
- Development of digital twins for industrial robots
- Enhancing kinematic models developed in CAM software packages with facilities developed in CAE software packages
- Integration of several software packages (CAD/CAE/CAM) to develop digital twins
