Summary

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) — encompassing smart grids, industrial control systems, autonomous vehicles, healthcare systems, and more — are at the heart of critical infrastructure. The convergence of cyber and physical components in CPS brings unprecedented efficiency and automation, but also introduces unique security challenges. The increased connectivity and system complexity have made CPS highly vulnerable to a range of sophisticated cyber attacks that can lead to catastrophic physical consequences.

This special issue aims to present cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and practical insights into the detection of cyber attacks in CPS. We invite contributions that address both theoretical and applied aspects, highlighting challenges, emerging trends, real-world case studies, and novel detection mechanisms that ensure the resilience, reliability, and security of CPS.

Topics of Interest (but not limited to):
· Intrusion detection systems tailored for CPS
· Machine learning and AI-based detection approaches
· Anomaly detection in real-time CPS data streams
· Detection of stealthy and zero-day attacks
· Hybrid models combining physics-based and data-driven techniques
· Cyber attack detection in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
· Detection in time-critical and resource-constrained CPS
· Forensics and traceability in cyber-physical environments
· Edge and cloud-based detection frameworks
· Resilient architectures supporting proactive detection
· Benchmarking datasets and evaluation metrics
· Real-world applications and empirical studies (e.g., SCADA, smart grid, connected vehicles)

Abstract Industrial Control Systems (ICS) in Operational Technology (OT) environments face unique cybersecurity challenges due to legacy systems, critical operational needs, and incompatibility with standard IT security practices. To address these challenges, this paper presents the Security Operation and Event Management (SOEM) platform, a software designed to support Security Operations Centers (SOCs) in reaching full visibility of OT environments. SOEM integrates diverse log sources and intrusion detection systems, including logs generated by the control system itself and additional on-the-shelf products, to enhance situational awareness and enable rapid incident response.
