CMES 2024 Young Researcher Award Honors Three Outstanding Scholars
We are delighted to announce the recipients of the CMES 2024 Young Researcher Award:
Dr. Guannan Wang, Zhejiang University, China
Dr. Toufique Ahmed Soomro, Charles Sturt University, Australia
Dr. Jiale Yan, Peking University, China

Guannan Wang (Zhejiang University, China)
Dr. Guannan Wang is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Zhejiang University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Zhejiang University and the University of Virginia, respectively, and later worked with Prof. Satya N. Atluri as a postdoctoral researcher at Texas Tech University. His research focuses on multiphysics modeling, multiscale simulations, structural dynamics, adhesion durability, and hypergravity mechanics of soft materials. He has published over 90 papers in leading journals such as Nature Materials, Science Advances, and Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids. He was listed among the “Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists 2025” and received the 2024 CMES Young Researcher Award.

Toufique Ahmed Soomro (Charles Sturt University, Australia)
Dr. Toufique Ahmed Soomro (Senior Member, IEEE) is a Research Data Engineer at the Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Futures Institute, Charles Sturt University, Australia. He earned his Ph.D. in AI and Image Processing from CSU and has over 15 years of experience in AI, biomedical imaging, smart agriculture, and IoT. He holds a U.S. patent in breast cancer detection and has published extensively in high-impact journals and conferences. His research has been supported by CSU and international collaborators in China, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia. Recognized among the World’s Top 2% Scientists, he received the 2024 CMES Young Researcher Award for his contributions to applied AI and biomedical innovation.

Jiale Yan (Peking University, China)
Dr. Jiale Yan is an Assistant Research Fellow at Peking University. He received his Ph.D. from Harbin Engineering University in 2021, completed joint doctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley from 2018 to 2020, and joined the College of Engineering at Peking University in 2022 for postdoctoral research. His research focuses on fluid–structure interaction in ship and ocean engineering, cross-medium water entry/exit, the theory and applications of meshfree methods, and high-performance computing. He has published 26 SCI-indexed papers in leading journals such as the J. Comput. Phys., Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng., and J. Fluid Mech., with more than 550 citations to date.
This award celebrates their exceptional contributions to advancing engineering sciences.
We warmly congratulate all awardees for their exceptional research achievements and sincerely thank all participants of the 2024 CMES Young Researcher Award.
