Summary
Berry fruits (such as grapes, blueberry, strawberries, raspberries, etc.) represent economically important horticultural crops and valuable sources of health-promoting compounds. These fruits are widely appreciated not only for their sensory characteristics but also for their high content of antioxidants, vitamins, and other bioactive molecules. The development and ripening of berry fruits involve complex physiological and molecular processes that regulate growth, metabolism, and the accumulation of various compounds such as sugars, organic acids, and anthocyanins. Despite significant advances in plant biology and the increasing availability of high-throughput omics technologies, many of the regulatory mechanisms underlying berry fruit development and quality formation remain to be fully understood. This special issue aims to gather innovative research addressing the physiological and molecular bases of berry fruit development and quality formation. In particular, contributions exploring the following topics are encouraged:
· The hormonal and environmental regulation of berry development.
· Metabolic pathways involved in flavor, color, and nutritional quality.
· Transcription factors and molecular networks controlling ripening.
· Physiological responses to pre-harvest factors that determine final fruit quality.
Original research articles, technical and review papers that advance our understanding of these processes in berry crops are welcome.
