Sexual disorders and associated help-seeking behaviors in Canada

    Gerald Brock1, Edson D. Moreira Jr2, Dale B. Glasser3, Clive Gingell4
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2953-2961, 2006
Abstract Objectives: To study sexual activity, the prevalence of sexual difficulties and related help-seeking behaviors among mature adults in Canada.
Materials and methods: A telephone survey (random digit dialed) was conducted in Canada in 2001 to 2002. Interviews were based on a standardized questionnaire, including demographics, general health, relationships, and sexual behaviors, attitudes and beliefs. The survey was completed by a total of 1007 individuals (500 men and 507 women) aged 40 to 80 years in Canada.
Results: Overall, 83% of men and 71% of women had engaged in sexual intercourse during the 12 months preceding the interview, and… More >

GU radiation oncologists consensus on bone loss from androgen deprivation

    Graeme G. Duncan1, Tom Corbett2, Himu Lukka2, Padraig Warde3, Tom Pickles1
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2962-2966, 2006
Abstract The majority of GU radiation oncologists in Canada attended a consensus meeting in November 2004. The topic of osteoporosis in men receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer was identified as a key theme. A chaired session with keynote speakers and review of the evidence took place followed by open debate. Participants were provided with background information.
Osteoporosis was defined as a T-score <= -2.5, but the importance of risk factors and clinical findings is noted. Dual DEXA is the current standard for assessment of bone density and relates well to fracture risk. The… More >

Expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase, Suroivin, DD3 and PCGEM1 messenger RNA in archival prostate carcinoma tissue

Hanna Bialkowska-Hobrzanska, David K. Driman, Robert Fletcher, Vimla Harry, Hassan Razvi
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2967-2974, 2006
Abstract Background: The variable clinical behavior displayed by prostate cancer (PCa) warrants investigation of potential PCa-specific biomarkers that could identify more aggressive tumor types and therefore provide prognostic value. Upregulation of expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), Survivin, DD3 and PCGEM1 mRNAs in PCa lesions has recently been described. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of detection of overexpression of these biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of PCa.
Material and methods: Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) prostatectomy tissue from 26 patients with PCa (Gleason score 3-9, mean 7) and 14 patients with… More >

Testicular radiation for primary seminoma in a solitary testis

Peter W. M. Chung, Michael A.S. Jewett, Padraig R. Warde
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2975-2977, 2006
Abstract Orchiectomy is the standard of care for patients with a second primary testicular tumor. We report a case of a man, with previous history of stage I left testicular germ cell tumor, who developed a contralateral seminoma and desired preservation of the remaining testis. Partial orchiectomy was not feasible due to tumor size and percutaneous needle biopsy revealed classical seminoma. He was treated with radiotherapy to the testis. Post treatment biopsy revealed no evidence of disease. At 32 months follow-up, he has not required androgen replacement. He has preservation of total testosterone level and libido. More >

Treatment of the inguinal regions in penile cancer: a review of the literature and treatment proposal

    Daniel Taussky1, Juanita Crook1, Abdullah Al Ghamdi2, Neil Fleshner2, Michael A. S. Jewett2
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2978-2983, 2006
Abstract Penile cancer is a rare malignancy affecting only 1 per 100,000 men in North America and Western Europe. Although the majority of men present with clinically negative inguinal lymph nodes, node positivity is associated with a ven; poor prognosis. Both the management of positive nodes, and the management of clinically negative nodes in intermediate- and high-risk patients remain controversial. Experience with penile cancer is often limited as even tertiary referral cancer centers may see only one or two such patients per year. The literature, which consists mainly of retrospective studies of patients treated over several More >

    Renal pseudoaneurysm following percutaneous nephrolithotomy

    Glenn M. Cannon, Nikhil B. Amesur, Timothy D. Averch1
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2984-2987, 2006
Abstract Percutaneous renal surgen; can be utilized as treatment for a variety of urologic conditions. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy remains the treatment of choice for many large and complex renal calculi. Despite having a low overall complication rate, postoperative bleeding can occur. We report a case of significant hemorrhage from a renal pseduoaneurysm in a patient requiring anticoagulation following percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The bleeding was controlled by percutaneous coil embolization. Current management recommendations of postoperative hemorrhage following percutaneous renal surgery are reviewed. More >

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2990-2992, 2006
Abstract Primary epididymal adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy with fewer than 30 documented cases. We report a case of a 57-year-old patient with a para testicular mass in the presence of retroperitoneal metastatic disease. Histology confirmed the presence of primary paratesticular adenocarcinoma. In this report we review the index case, the pertinent literature and discuss adjuvant therapy. More >

Bilateral ureteroceles progressing to reversible acute renal failure in an adult

Tajender S. Vasu, William Clayton Elliot, Robert S. H. Lai
    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 2993-2996, 2006
Abstract We present a case of an adult male who was admitted with acute renal failure. In evaluating the potential causes of renal failure, workup discovered bilateral ureteroceles. Surgical treatments of the ureteroceles lead to reversal of his acute renal failure. This is the first time that treatment of ureteroceles has been reported to correct acute renal failure in the English literature. More >
