Summary

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues and is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to systemic health disturbances. Growing evidence suggests that periodontal inflammation may influence the onset, progression, and severity of several systemic disorders, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases, and other chronic inflammatory conditions.
The biological mechanisms underlying these associations involve complex interactions between microbial dysbiosis, host immune responses, inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress pathways, endothelial dysfunction, and epigenetic regulation. Recent advances in molecular biology, immunology, microbiome research, and translational medicine have considerably expanded our understanding of the oral-systemic connection.

This thematic collection aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current advances in the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking periodontal disease with systemic health. Original research articles, reviews, clinical studies, translational investigations, and interdisciplinary contributions are welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Oral microbiome and systemic dysbiosis
• Inflammatory and immune pathways in oral-systemic diseases
• Periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases
• Periodontitis and diabetes mellitus
• Oral-systemic interactions in metabolic disorders
• Oxidative stress and cellular signaling mechanisms
• Biomarkers of periodontal and systemic inflammation
• Epigenetic and genetic mechanisms linking oral and systemic diseases
• Precision medicine and personalized approaches in periodontology
• Translational and clinical implications of oral-systemic health
