    BIOCELL, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 1-12, 2017, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2017.41.001
Abstract A decrease in the tubular expression of albumin endocytic transporters megalin and cubilin has been associated with diabetic nephropathy, but there are no comprehensive studies to date relating early tubulointerstitial injury and the effect of the disease on both transporters in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). We used eight-weekold male C57BL/6 mice divided into two groups; one of them received the vehicle (control group), while the other received the vehicle + 200 mg/kg streptozotocin (T1DM). Ten weeks after the injection, we evaluated plasma insulin, enzymuria, urinary vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), tubulointerstitial fibrosis and proximal tubule histology, markers of autophagy, and… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 13-18, 2017, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2017.41.013
Abstract Antifungal activity and mode of action of nine essential oils (EOs) against S. cerevisiae cells were examined. Antifungal effects of commercial lemon peel, orange peel, tea tree, turpentine, rosemary, peppermint, thyme, oregano and clove oils were determined through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) and inhibition zone measurements. The most effective oil was turpentine oil. Orange peel, thyme and oregano oils were also effective, according to MIC and MFC. Inhibition zone measurements, also revealed oregano, orange peel, thyme, turpentine and clove oils as most efficient ones. Later, membrane damage of yeast cells was studied by measuring the extracellular… More >

An integrated analysis of mRNA-miRNA transcriptome data revealed hub regulatory networks in three genitourinary cancers

    BIOCELL, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 19-26, 2017, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2017.41.019
Abstract Bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular carcinoma are the top four genitourinary cancers in China. Here we analyzed mRNA and miRNA expression profiles of carcinomas of the bladder (TCC), kidney (ccRCC) and testis (TGCT) to uncover their specific regulatory mechanisms. The gene expression profiles of GSE31617 were downloaded from GEO database, which contained 27 samples, including 10 TCC, 7 TGCT and 10 ccRCC. Specific up- and downregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed microRNAs (DEmiRNAs) of each cancer were selected and target genes of DEmiRNAs were predicted. Gene interaction network of the shared genes and target genes of DEmiRNAs of… More >

Decreased invasion ability of hypotaurine synthesis deficient glioma cells was partially due to hypomethylation of Wnt5a promoter

Abstract Glioma is one of the lethal central nervous system tumors. The infiltrative and invasive growth nature makes it difficult to identify the boundary between glioma and the normal tissues, resulting in inevitable recurrence after surgery operation. Gliomas do not metastasize, so to prevent the residual tumor from proliferating or invading is a key challenge. Previous report indicated that hypotaurine could facilitate glioma invasion and suppress demethylases’ activities. Using a hypotaurine synthesis deficient U251 cell line, we proved that the cells invasion ability was impaired. Gene expression profile analysis exhibited that knocking down one of the key enzymes of hypotaurine synthesis,… More >
